Choosing A Domain Name
Choosing a domain name for your website or your blog is not that hard to do, the hard part will be to find a domain name that works, that is available. As you ponder about what name you want to use, save the brain cells because the only way it is going to work is if the name is available, and millions of them are already taken. Below we have compiled a collection of do and don’t that apply when you are searching for that just right domain name.
Do:
- Try to match the name as closely to the purpose of the site. Nothing fancy or cutesy, just something simple and easy to spell and remember. (ie: HelpWithBlogging.com)
- Match the title to the site as closely as possible. (ie: MarineCorpsBootCampSurvival.com)
- Use easy to spell words. (ie: HelpWithBlogging.com)
- Always use the suffix .com , unless you are a charity or a government entity.
Don’t
- Use number letter combinations as they can cause confusion. (ie: Four21.com)
- Use a hypen, under ANY circumstance. (ie:Love-repair.com)
- Put two words together that have the same letters touching. (ie: loveemotions.com)
- Only use suffix’s like .org or .net…..get a .com suffix if possible. USE NOTHING ELSE!!!
A great thing to do is to go to a site like GoDaddy.com and just start plugging in names until you find one that you are happy with. It is suggested that you register the domain name for two years as it has been suggested that search engines take you more seriously if are planning to be around for awhile. Also it may help if you certify the domain name, as this proves ownership and most thieves and scams do not certify. Another thing worth considering when choosing a domain name is the level of privacy you will NEED. If you do not want anyone to know who the owner is of the site, then upgrade to a private domain. If privacy is not an issue, then save your money and do not get what is basically an unlisted domain name.
You also need to understand that every service you choose, you will pay more to obtain. There is no right or wrong answer, you will need to choose the level of registration that suites your own needs.
Starting a site (blog or website) should be an exciting experience that is really not that difficult to undertake. We encourage you to also look at Artisteer.com and Hostgator to suit your other needs because they have a proven track record world wide and we not only recommend them, WE USE THEM!!!!
Choose wisely with your domain name, you will never want to change it and if this is your first domain name, then it will always be “that special one”. Internet sites are like tattoos….they can become addictive if you are not careful. As you move towards getting going on the web we want to wish you the best of luck and we encourage you to just get started. If you don’t start someday, when will you?
